Moncure Plywood Log Specifications

SPECIES:
SOUTHERN YELLOW PINE: Loblolly, Shortleaf, Longleaf (NO Virginia pine); Pond Pine is acceptable but must be segregated on separate loads.
SOFT HARDWOODS (every specie except oak, hickory and cypress); Cottonwood is acceptable but must be segregated on separate loads
Any load containing off specie logs will be classified as least valuable specie or those logs will be deducted from the load.
DIAMETER: SOUTHERN YELLOW PINE 10” DIB min 27” DOB max
MIXED SOFT HARDWOODS 8” DIB min 27” DOB max.
SOFT HARDWOODS or POPLAR
9’ Logs 11” DIB min 27” DOB max.
POPLAR 10” DIB min 27” DOB max.
Any load that contains more than 5 small tops or cull exceeding 3500 lbs will be subject to refusal
The minimum size butt log acceptable for Pine must measure 11” DOB or 10” DIB at 17’ 6”
In addition Pine butt cuts 26’ in length must be 10” DIB on the small end
LENGTHS: ACCEPTABLE LENGTHS ARE:
8’9” TO 9’ (Hwd Only) OR 17’ 4” TO 17’ 8” OR 26’ TO 26’ 4”
QUALITY STANDARDS
KNOTS:
1. MUST be trimmed flush with log.
2. SIZE must not exceed 6” in diameter
3. No more than 2 4” knots in any 1 foot section or no more than 3 knots exceeding 1” in a 1 foot section
(no ring knots)
CROOKS & SWEEP:
Logs containing compound sweeps or end crooks will NOT be accepted. Sweeps at log center of 8’8” bolts will be acceptable if within the following tolerance:
LOG DOB ALLOWABLE SWEEP
Less than 10” up to 2”
10” to 15” up to 4”
Over 15” up to 6”
OTHER DEFECTS: Logs with rot over 2” deep scars, forked, shattered, split, double heart, excessive taper (swelled butts or bell ends) or any other serious defect will not be accepted.
CRITERIA FOR LOG SCALE DEDUCTIONS
SPECIE: Unacceptable species will be placed back on truck.
DIAMETER: Logs cut under minimum diameter will be deducted by the weight of the 8’8” increment according to the small end diameter while oversized , logs over 27” in diameter, will be placed back on truck.
LENGTHS: Long logs will be deducted by weight to the nearest foot according to the small end diameter. Short logs will be deducted by the weight of the 8’8” increment according to the small end diameter.
KNOTS: Limbs not trimmed flush with the bole will be penalized 100 lbs. per knot. Excessively knotty logs will be deducted by the weight of the 8’8” increment according to the small end diameter.
CROOKS, SWEEP & OTHER DEFECTS: Unacceptable logs will be deducted by the weight of the 8’8” increment according to the small end diameter.
SWELL BUTTS: Any log that has a butt size larger than the small end diameter minus 2” multiplied by 2 is considered to have swell butt and the whole log will be placed back on the truck or its entire length deducted. (Table available)
METAL: Any log containing metal or other foreign material will be placed back on truck.
HIGH GRADING: Any given load of logs should contain at least 30% butt cut logs. Any load not containing at least 30% butt logs may be rejected.
